Pelton Wheel Turbine is the type of impulse or hydraulic turbine which is used for high heads for the generation of power. In this, the jet after leaving the nozzle runs in the open air and strikes the bucket or vane. The Pelton wheel casing prevents the splashing of water and it will provide a discharge of water from the nozzle to the tailrace. The casing surrounding the wheel has no hydraulic function to perform, unlike the reaction turbine where the casing plays an important hydraulic function. Needle Spear will control the water flow and it moves insides the nozzle and provides smooth flow so there can be very less energy loss. When the nozzle is completely closed by moving the spear in the forward direction the amount of water striking the runner is reduced is zero but the runner due to inertia continues revolving for a long time.

The present invention relates to a mechanism for actuating a deflector of a Pelton wheel turine or unit and more particularly to such a mechanism of the type in which an electric servomotor is used to maintain the deflector in its opened position, and the stored energy of a spring is used to close the deflector. A Pelton wheel is of a type of impulse turbine and is usually operated from a high-head source ranging from to 1, meters when the volume of water available is relatively small. The water under pressure which is introduced into the casing of the Pelton wheel is accelerated when it is forced to flow through a nozzle and then the resulting high-velocity jet impinges on the buckets of the turbine wheel or runner, whereby the runner is rotated. A deflector is disposed at the discharge end of the nozzle pipe so that in the case of an emergency, the high-velocity jet emerging from the nozzle is deflected and thereby prevented from impinging on the buckets of the runner. A mechanism which uses a fluid operated servomotor for opening and closing the deflector has been well known in the art, but the fluid operated servomotor needs not only a source for supplying oil under pressure but also a device for controlling the pressure of the working oil so that there arises the problem of such associated or auxiliary equipment becoming complicated in construction and large in size for the output of the Pelton wheel.

Pelton Wheel Turbine is the only impulse type of hydraulic turbine named after Lester A. Pelton, the American engineer. It is well suited for operating under high heads. It is a channel or pipeline which controls the flow of water or it also acts as directing medium for the fluid flow. The nozzle is used to increase the kinetic energy of water which is used to strike the buckets attached to the runner. Spear is used to control the quantity of water striking the buckets. It is operated by a handwheel.

The Pelton wheel turbine is a tangential flow impulse turbine used for high heads of water and It is invented by Lester Allan Pelton, an American Engineer. The energy available at the inlet of the turbine is only kinetic energy. The pressure energy at the inlet and outlet of the turbine is atmospheric. This is a hydraulic turbine and the main uses of these turbines are in the hydropower plant to generate electricity. It is a flexible source of electricity and also the cost of electricity generation is relatively low. The amount of water striking the buckets of the runner is controlled by providing a spear in the nozzle. The speed is a conical needle which is operated either by a hand wheel or automatically in an axial direction depending upon the size of the unit.
