Developmental psychology is the scientific study of how and why human beings change over the course of their life. Originally concerned with infants and children , the field has expanded to include adolescence , adult development , aging , and the entire lifespan. Developmental psychologists aim to explain how thinking, feeling, and behaviors change throughout life.

Development of the human body is the process of growth to maturity. The process begins with fertilization , where an egg released from the ovary of a female is penetrated by a sperm cell from a male. The resulting zygote develops through mitosis and cell differentiation , and the resulting embryo then implants in the uterus , where the embryo continues development through a fetal stage until birth.

The theory of psychosocial development created by Erik Erikson is one of the best-known personality theories. The theory differs from many others in that it addresses development across the entire lifespan, from birth through death. At each stage, the individual deals with a conflict that serves as a turning point in development. When the conflict is resolved successfully, the person is able to develop the psychosocial quality associated with that particular stage of development.
