Gifted children are born with natural abilities well above the average for their age. Children can be gifted in any area of ability, and they can also be gifted in more than one area. For example, a child might be gifted creatively and intellectually.

What is the Difference Between Gifted and Talented?

During my time as an elementary teacher of the gifted, many parents asked me if there was a difference between being gifted and talented? The answer, of course, is yes. To qualify for a gifted, or enrichment, program in the United States, students must score well on a state-approved test of intellectual ability. Each state conducts different tests and requires scores for admission. Students must score a minimum of which loosely equates to a similar IQ score for entrance, though some schools have the ability to accept students who score lower but meet certain socioeconomic criteria.

Gifted children comprise a minority of the population, although not such a small minority as is sometimes thought. Talented children, by contrast, are those whose abilities have already been translated into achievements, and who are currently performing at a level that places them within the top 10 percent of their age-peers. Gifts are natural abilities whereas talents are systematically developed skills. Giftedness is not an automatic guarantee of success. A range of environmental variables affect talent development, such as parental encouragement, family relationships, the provisions the child's school makes, or fails to make, to develop his or her gifts into talents, and even the social ethos of the community that can dictate that talents are valued and, therefore, which programs of talent development will be established or funded. Encouragement and assistance from home and school are essential if gifted children are to develop as talented, but the children themselves must maintain their motivation to succeed. Children, no matter how gifted, will not achieve high levels of talent unless they are prepared to work and study to develop their abilities.

What is Gifted and Talented?

Intellectual giftedness is an intellectual ability significantly higher than average. It is a characteristic of children, variously defined, that motivates differences in school programming. It is thought to persist as a trait into adult life, with various consequences studied in longitudinal studies of giftedness over the last century. There is no generally agreed definition of giftedness for either children or adults, but most school placement decisions and most longitudinal studies over the course of individual lives have followed people with IQs in the top 2. Definitions of giftedness also vary across cultures.

The two terms gifted and talented are two adjectives that are used to describe individuals with great natural abilities. In the context of education, these two terms have specific meanings. Although both words are used to refer to students with one or more abilities developed to a level significantly ahead of their age and experience, gifted specifically refer to the abilities in academic subjects such as science, maths, and language whereas talented refer to the abilities art, music, deign, etc. This is the main difference between gifted and talented. There is a clear lack of empirical studies about the socio-emotional characteristics of gifted and talented children, especially in the context of social skills. This study aimed to characterize the social skills of such children, identifying similarities and differences in the skill repertoire in comparison with non-gifted children. The sample contained children from 8 to 12 years old, of which children were identified as gifted. The results indicate a more elaborate social skills repertoire for gifted children in all categories with the exception of empathic skills. The implications of these results for the planning of educational programs are discussed and future research directions are identified.
