Academic Self-Concept and Self-Efficacy: How Different Are They Really?
Women in business are often told they need to have confidence to succeed. I can be supremely confident that I will fail at an endeavor. A financial education report by T. Psychologists have found that if a person has lower levels of self-efficacy they are more likely to focus on feelings of failure rather than success.
People with higher levels of self-efficacy are more likely to cope better in adverse situations Park and Folkman, This distinction is important. Even where there is no difference in the quality of the performance, women are more likely than men to underrate their abilities and job performances, are less likely to negotiate for a raise and are more likely to express doubt about their careers.
A recent Fairfax article about the disparity in maths scores between boys and girls notes that the gap appeared to be the result of differences in self-efficacy, not ability. If there is no measurable difference in the quality of performance, then, the difference comes in how people think about what they do.

Confidence versus Self-efficacy
Academic motivation researchers sometimes struggle to decipher the distinctive characteristics of what appear to be highly analogous constructs. In this article, we discuss important similarities between self-concept and self-efficacy as well as some notable differences. Both constructs share many similarities such as centrality of perceived competence in construct definition; use of mastery experience, social comparison, and reflected appraisals as major information sources; and a domain-specific and multidimensional nature. Both predict motivation, emotion, and performance to varying degrees. However, there are also important differences.

Self-confidence is considered one of the most influential motivators and regulators of behavior in people's everyday lives Bandura, A growing body of evidence suggests that one's perception of ability or self-confidence is the central mediating construct of achievement strivings e. Ericsson and his colleagues have taken the position that the major influence in the acquisition of expert performance is the confidence and motivation to persist in deliberate practice for a minimum of 10 years. Self-confidence is not a motivational perspective by itself. It is a judgment about capabilities for accomplishment of some goal, and, therefore, must be considered within a broader conceptualization of motivation that provides the goal context.

2.1: Self-Concept, Self-Esteem and Self-Efficacy
Self-concept refers to the overall idea of who a person thinks he or she is. Each person has an overall self-concept that might be encapsulated in a short list of overarching characteristics that he or she finds important. In some situations, personal characteristics, such as our abilities, personality, and other distinguishing features, will best describe who we are. You might consider yourself laid back, traditional, funny, open minded, or driven, or you might label yourself a leader or a thrill seeker. In other situations, our self-concept may be tied to group or cultural membership.
Self-efficacy is, according to psychologist Albert Bandura who originally proposed the concept, a personal judgment of "how well one can execute courses of action required to deal with prospective situations". Self-efficacy affects every area of human endeavor. By determining the beliefs a person holds regarding their power to affect situations, it strongly influences both the power a person actually has to face challenges competently and the choices a person is most likely to make. These effects are particularly apparent, and compelling, with regard to investment behaviors such as in health , education , and agriculture.
Victimization by peers has been associated with low academic performance and internalizing problems. Still, not all students who experience peer victimization report a reduction in performance. The current study examines the potential protective nature of self-esteem and social self-efficacy in the relationship between peer victimization and academic performance. A sample of middle school students participated.

Someone who does not feel happy about the way she looks may have low self-esteem and feel she is not worthy of anyone's love or acceptance. This person most likely deems outer beauty as being important in her life and will probably do everything to look beautiful while still not 'feeling' beautiful. Another person might not care too much about how she looks and not put as much effort into their outer appearance. In this case, she might still have a higher self-esteem than the other person who frets over her outer appearance while still not feeling pretty enough. Both of these persons regard outer appearance differently and this in turn affects their self-esteems differently.
