Psychology, Mental Health and Distress

It weaves together a sophisticated, engaging argument that draws on philosophy, neuroscience and an array of psychology sub-fields to firmly locate feelings at the heart of an embodied psychology. It provides a majestic and broad account of the affective realm including emotions, moods, affects and feeling and its relevance to psychology, interrogating why this realm has been treated as relatively unproblematic and under-explored despite the 'affective turn' that has taken place elsewhere in the social sciences and humanities. Cromby's writing sweeps the reader up and takes them through wide-ranging and convincing arguments that feelings are central to all of the diverse fields within psychology. Here feelings are simultaneously social and individual, related to ideologies as well as socialised experiences. He grounds his argument by considering the ways in which we might investigate and interrogate such an approach, using worked examples in health and clinical psychology across 3 chapters. This demonstrates its value in enabling thorough re-conceptualizations of key psychological phenomena, from the biological to the social, which incorporate experience, the materiality of the body as well as material environments and circumstances.

Psychology, Mental Health and Distress

Health-care workers, suffering burnout and fatigue during neoliberal economics, benefit from compassion training, both in their practice and personally. Randomised control trials RCTs demonstrate compassion-type interventions are effective, given sufficient intervention timing, duration and design methodology. Psychology creates outcome measures of adequacies and deficiencies in compassion, demonstrating their importance statistically, with reservations. The effective protection of mental health by self-compassion in both SUACs and health care professionals is evident. It is clear from qualitative research that SUACs prefer compassionate mental health. It also makes a large difference to mental health in general populations.

Feeling Bodies: Embodying Psychology

Is depression simply the result of chemical imbalances, or Schizophrenia a wholly biological disorder? In this ground-breaking and highly innovative text, Cromby et al deliver an introduction to the the biopsychosocial paradigm for understanding and treating psychological distress, taking into consideration the wider contexts that engender the onset of mental illness and critiquing the limitations in the sole use of the biomedical model in psychological practice. Rather than biologically determined or clinically measurable, readers are encouraged to consider mental illness as a subjective experience that is expressed according to the individual experiences of the sufferer rather than the rigidity of diagnostic categories.

John Cromby previously conducted research and teaching at the Universities of Nottingham and Bradford, and has experience of working in mental health, drug addiction, and learning disability settings.

What does the word 'schizophrenia' mean to you? Perhaps your first thought is of someone with a medical condition that involves some kind of brain disease? But what if you knew that the person in question had been through a traumatic childhood?
