Philosophy and Christian Theology
This selection is an excerpt from Handbook of Christian Education. It places a high value upon knowledge, both of God and of His works. It describes the moral and spiritual fruits of this knowledge and defines its ultimate purpose. The present Christian school movement can be understood only as a part—certainly in these times a very significant and necessary part—of the total endeavor of Christian education. A full understanding of this movement requires an examination of the basis upon which its educational theory and practices rest: its philosophy of education. Accordingly there follows, first, a presentation of the basic beliefs of Christian education and, second, an application of these beliefs to the specific mission of the Christian school.
The Bible motivates and regulates us in the development of education for Christian living and Christian service both in Christian community and in society at large. The Bible is the infallible, written revelation of God , giving us true knowledge concerning Him, concerning our position and task in the world, and concerning everything that He reveals in His Word. Through that sacrificial death God redeemed His people and is restoring them into His image. Through His redeemed people God is building His kingdom, and He finally will renew His entire creation. That faith is worked in the human heart by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the source of all enlightenment. Only He can guide the teacher and the student to view all knowledge through the spectacles of Scripture so that they, by faith, can perceive the truth which proceeds from the testimony that God is creator of heaven and earth, and that our Lord Jesus Christ is the Redeemer of all who repent of their sins and believe in Him as Lord and Savior.

It will be argued that theism is the basis for all education, that we really can know reality but that there is a limit to what can be known by means of general revelation alone. Further argument surrounds the importance of the Bible as a means of knowing special revelation. Brief analysis is given to the major philosophical influences leading to the secularization of education. The Christian educator must hold to theism.

Many of the doctrines central to Christianity have important philosophical implications or presuppositions. In this article, we begin with a brief general discussion of the relationship between philosophy and Christian dogma, and then we turn our attention to three of the most philosophically challenging Christian doctrines: the trinity, the incarnation, and the atonement. We take these three as our focus because, unlike for example doctrines about providence or the attributes of God, these are distinctive to Christian theology and, unlike for example the doctrine of original sin or the Real Presence of Christ in the eucharist, these have been the subject of a great deal of discussion over the past couple of decades. In the history of Christian theology, philosophy has sometimes been seen as a natural complement to theological reflection, whereas at other times practitioners of the two disciplines have regarded each other as mortal enemies.
The word philosophy is derived from two Greek words.
