Biology and Biotechnology: Science, Applications, and Issues
Biotechnology , the use of biology to solve problems and make useful products. The most prominent area of biotechnology is the production of therapeutic proteins and other drugs through genetic engineering. Biotechnology is particularly important in the field of medicine, where it facilitates the production of therapeutic proteins and other drugs. Synthetic insulin and synthetic growth hormone and diagnostic tests to detect various diseases are just some examples of how biotechnology is impacting medicine. Biotechnology has also proved helpful in refining industrial processes, in environmental cleanup, and in agricultural production. Humans have also long tapped the biological processes of microorganisms to make bread, alcoholic beverages, and cheese. People have been harnessing biological processes to improve their quality of life for some 10, years, beginning with the first agricultural communities.
Biotechnology is nearly as old as humanity itself. The food you eat and the pets you love? You can thank our distant ancestors for kickstarting the agricultural revolution, using artificial selection for crops, livestock, and other domesticated animals. When Edward Jenner invented vaccines and when Alexander Fleming discovered antibiotics, they were harnessing the power of biotechnology. And, of course, modern civilization would hardly be imaginable without the fermentation processes that gave us beer, wine, and cheese! Biotechnologists do this by sequencing, or reading, the DNA found in nature, and then manipulating it in a test tube — or, more recently, inside of living cells. In fact, the most exciting biotechnology advances of recent times are occurring at the microscopic level and smaller!
Biotechnology is a broad area of biology , involving the use of living systems and organisms to develop or make products. Depending on the tools and applications, it often overlaps with related scientific fields. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, biotechnology has expanded to include new and diverse sciences , such as genomics , recombinant gene techniques, applied immunology , and development of pharmaceutical therapies and diagnostic tests. The term biotechnology was first used by Karl Ereky in , meaning the production of products from raw materials with the aid of living organisms. The wide concept of biotechnology encompasses a wide range of procedures for modifying living organisms according to human purposes, going back to domestication of animals, cultivation of the plants, and "improvements" to these through breeding programs that employ artificial selection and hybridization. Modern usage also includes genetic engineering as well as cell and tissue culture technologies. The American Chemical Society defines biotechnology as the application of biological organisms, systems, or processes by various industries to learning about the science of life and the improvement of the value of materials and organisms such as pharmaceuticals, crops, and livestock.

As the context for Russian industrial activities steadily incorporates principles of market economics, many public and private customers for pharmaceutical products are continually reconsidering which products they purchase and at what prices. An abundance of imported products are readily available in Russia while consumer confidence in goods made in Russia has declined. Russian scientists and manufacturers are having difficulty keeping pace with advances in technology throughout the world. Thus, it is not surprising that domestic enterprises which manufacture products for protecting human health are operating at less than 25 percent of capacity and that many production lines are now outmoded.

The revolutionary spirit of those advances prior to the creation of the term—such as the fermentation of bread, cheese or wine— has remained intact until the present day, more than 6, years later, just when human beings are wondering what, if any, are the limits of this technology, that could take us a very long way in the future.
