Short Story

Edgar Allan Poe — American short-story writer, poet, and critic. Raymond Carver — Henry — American short-story writer. A fictional prose tale of no specified length, but too short to be published as a volume on its own, as novellas sometimes and novels usually are.

A short story will normally concentrate on a single event with only one or two characters, more economically than a novel's sustained exploration of social background. There are similar fictional forms of greater antiquity—fables, lais , folktales, parables, and the French conte —but the short story as we know it flourished in the magazines of the 19th and early 20th centuries, especially in the USA, which has a particularly strong tradition.

A short story is a piece of prose fiction that typically can be read in one sitting and focuses on a self-contained incident or series of linked incidents, with the intent of evoking a single effect or mood. The short story is one of the oldest types of literature and has existed in the form of legends , mythic tales , folk tales , fairy tales , fables and anecdotes in various ancient communities across the world. The modern short story developed in the early 19th century. The short story is a crafted form in its own right. Short stories make use of plot, resonance, and other dynamic components as in a novel , but typically to a lesser degree. Determining what exactly separates a short story from longer fictional formats is problematic. Some authors have argued that a short story must have a strict form.

The short story is usually concerned with a single effect conveyed in only one or a few significant episodes or scenes. The form encourages economy of setting , concise narrative, and the omission of a complex plot ; character is disclosed in action and dramatic encounter but is seldom fully developed. Before the 19th century the short story was not generally regarded as a distinct literary form.

My blog posts have taken many forms over the years — WoW-related mostly, from transmog to raiding to Best-in-Slot lists, but also short stories, personal thoughts, and school work. I enjoy everything I write, but I have come to realize that my favorite thing next to actual writing stories when I have the ideas is writing about writing. Recently, my very talented streamer and video-creator beau WoWMartiean got access to the current Alpha testing for Warlords of Draenor. It has been interesting to sneak peeks over his shoulder, despite how adamant I usually am to keep my distance and not learn anything about WoW content before it is released.

A short story is a short work of fiction. Fiction, as you know, is prose writing about imagined events and characters. Prose writing differs from poetry in that it does not depend on verses, meters or rhymes for its organization and presentation.

If I had to nit-pick between a novel and a short story, I would still choose a short story. And, not because its shortin length and is easy to finish, but because it takes a great deal of effort and creativity to pen down a story from more than 50 pages down to a few… It is the most difficult of all tasks—to edit and cut short a limitless flow of thoughts and scenes into one short and self-sufficient piece of story. Crafting a short story is an art in itself; something aspiring novel writers should expose themselves to more—it would help them develop, shape and polish the chapters of their novels for better.
