Guidance counseling , byname counseling and guidance , the process of helping individuals discover and develop their educational, vocational, and psychological potentialities and thereby to achieve an optimal level of personal happiness and social usefulness. It is implicit in the philosophy of counseling that these objectives are complementary rather than conflicting. The function of those who guide children and young people is not to effect a compromise between the requirements of individuals on the one hand and the demands of the community on the other. It is rather to orient the individual toward those opportunities afforded by his environment that can best guarantee the fulfillment of his personal needs and aspirations. Guidance, in this sense, is a pervasive activity in which many persons and organizations take part. It is afforded to individuals by their parents, relatives, and friends and by the community at large through various educational, industrial, social, religious, and political agencies and, particularly, through the press and broadcasting services.

Guidance and counselling are important for children, and schools have a huge role in bringing out the best in children. Good conduct is coveted, but sometimes young minds need guidance to polish their personality. Through counselling, children are given advice on how to manage and deal with emotional conflict and personal problems. Proper counselling will help incorporate valuable lessons in their daily life. Some sessions should involve career guidance, where the students are advised on the selection of courses and different career paths. It's important to prepare them for life after school and what to expect in the different fields they might opt for.

One initiative of this project is a national evaluation of the current provision of guidance and counselling in schools. The Education Review Office ERO evaluated how well 44 schools and five wharekura provided guidance and counselling for students. ERO surveyed students at these schools and wharekura. Overall, students were positive about guidance and counselling in their school, and most had someone they could talk to for support. Many said that guidance counsellors were able to help them and provided practical and useful advice and guidance. More than two-thirds of students said it was socially acceptable at their school to see someone about guidance and counselling, but commented that assurances about confidentiality and privacy, and ease of access made it easier to seek help.

Guidance is an integral part of education. A great teacher inspires, who is a priest, a counsellor who can help the learners by his conscious power.
